2019-2020 Odyssey of the Mind Problems

Problem 1: Longshot Solution
Divisions I, II & III
The team will present a performance about Longshot characters who save the Earth from a disastrous event. Three team-created vehicles will travel and deliver materials, including ARM & HAMMER Baking Soda, to a Reaction Area. The materials are combined to create a reaction that is depicted as the Longshots saving the world. The vehicles will travel simultaneously from different Start Areas and overcome team-created obstacles on their way to the Reaction Area. Two or more characters will not believe in the Longshots, but realize they were wrong and throw them a celebration after the special effect occurs. There will also be a “zero hour” countdown.

Problem 2: Net Working
Divisions I, II, III & IV
The team will create a performance where an original team-created Network Device is used to transmit different objects that represent different types of information in segments. Three Network Characters that represent components of a computer network will explain their role while information is being transported in their segment of a transmission. A Pop-Up Advertisement will appear, a Malware Character will interrupt the Network Device, and an Anti-Virus Hero will restore it so it works once again. An original song will be performed during the presentation and will include the playing of team made instruments.

Problem 3: Classics… The Effective Detective
Divisions I, II, III & IV
The team will create an original performance depicting a Detective Character that solves a real-world mystery chosen from a list. There will be three team-created clues: one hidden as a work of art the other two presented any way the team wishes. Another “red herring” clue will be discovered by the Detective Character to be a distraction. A Supervillain Character will try to stop the Detective and they will have an intellectual battle in the performance. There will also be sounds to enhance the performance. The entire solution must fit completely within 1, 2, or 3 containers as selected by the team.

Problem 4: Balsa Limbo
Divisions I, II, III & IV
The team will design, build, and test a structure made only of balsa wood, glue if desired, and the option of using one other material to hold the structure in limbo form, and to place as much weight as possible onto it. Before weight-placement begins, the structure must pass under a limbo bar and then be adjusted for testing. There will be a sound effect when the structure performs the limbo, a character made from balsa wood, and an original dance. The performance will also incorporate weight placement and a theme about dancing and movement

Problem 5: Gibberish or Not
Divisions I, II, III & IV
The team will create an original humorous performance about a Gibberish Character that makes three gibberish statements that cause people to try to figure out what each means. A Champion Character will present the “true meaning” of the statements as wise knowledge and the masses are happy. A Child Character knows the true meanings have nothing to do with the gibberish statements, but sees they are making the masses happy as they celebrate with song and decides to keep it a secret.

Primary: The Fashion Bug
Grades K-2
The team will create and present an original humorous performance depicting a fashion show featuring three different outfits modeled by insect characters. A narrator will announce and describe each fashion, an up-and-coming designer will explain inspiration behind one of the fashions, and a critic will give an opinion about them. The performance will also feature a team-created song and a commercial.
